The New Truck
One day, when I was about twenty, I decided to buy a brand new vehicle. So I asked around to some my acquaintances which one I should buy. Tom suggested a 1950's Chevy Corvette or a nice old car like that! Mike said to buy a brand new F-150 or F-250 with an off road package and 24" tires! ( I did NOT like the Ford part). Kenny agreed with both Mike and Tom, so he was of no help to me. Although their answers were good (except the Ford part), all I cared about was the answer from my wife, Gwen.
When I got home to Gwen, she said she had a present for me! She said that she received an inheritance of $10,000 and she wanted to buy a new truck! So, I told her that I had $40,000 saved up for a new truck, so we should buy a new one to replace my 1985 S-10. She said she wanted a Chevy Silverado. I agreed and we went online to see what the prices were for a customized Silverado. Chevy.com was the place to start. After about a half hour or so, the perfect truck popped up on the screen. It was a dark blue, 2001 Chevy Silverado HD, Quad cab; with an extended bed, 2.5 tons of tow capacity, an off road package, 28" tires, 3" suspension and a 3" body lift, and only 12 miles (Chevy's policy is that all new cars have at least 12 miles on them for getting them on and off the truck and moving them around the sales lot) . The best part was, the M.S.R.P. was $43,990! That truck was made just for me! I clicked on locate and to my surprise, it was waiting for me at Bennett Chevy up by the mall!
After we got to Bennett Chevy, a sales man came out to greet us. "Hello, I'm Jon! Can I help you?" "I don't know, can you?" I asked. "I've only worked here, what..." He paused. "Twenty-five years!" "Ok. Then maybe you can tell us where the Chevy trucks are?" "Yes, over here." So Gwen and I followed him over to the trucks. Without him saying anything, I said, "That's the one. That's the one I want!" Gwen agreed and Jon said, "I don't think you want that one. That one has been there since 2001! You don't want that one!" Gwen yelled at the sales guy. "If he said that's the one he wants, that's the one he wants!" "Ok! Ok! Come with me." He muttered as we walked into the building.
There, he went into a filing room, pulled out some papers, and came back out. "Here." He slid the folder with the papers in it across the table. "There's the info on that truck you 'wanted'." After about thirty seconds of Gwen and I looking at the info of the truck, Gwen said "Yea. That's the truck we want!" She looked at me and I know what she's saying. "Ok. How much more then the M.S.R.P. do we have to pay?" I said. He told me that we had to pay $5,999 more then the M.S.R.P. The total came out to $49,989! "Great!" I said. "We'll give you a check as soon as the bank tells us we can transfer the money!" "Ok. See you in a few days then?" Jon asked. "Yes. A few days," Gwen said.
The next five days went so slow, I had to do things just to keep my self busy. For example, wash the dishes instead of using the dishwasher, make a mess just to clean it up! It was a hard job keeping myself busy! Then, I talked to my cousin Nick to see how he was doing. I told him I was getting rid of my S-10. He told me he would buy it if I was willing to lower the price for him. I told him I was only selling it for $500 and would sell it to him for $350! He said ok and would give me the money tomorrow. So then, I had to clean out the S-10, find the title, and have him come get it so he can bring it back to Somers Point.
When I got home (about noon-thirty: or, in English, 12:30pm), the phone rang. It was the bank telling us that the money had been deposited into the savings account. So, Gwen drove her car to the bank and transferred the money to the checking account. When she got back, we went right to the car dealership. We asked for Jon but the man at the counter said he got fired. When we asked for what, the man told us 'Company issues'. So, I said to him, "We were already given a quote by Jon, can we pay the given..." I was interrupted. "If that's what you want to pay, then fine, pay that. But if you want a better deal, ..." He shrugged. "So...?" I asked. "Go see Chris, he's the main sales guy here. Tell him your one of Jon's customers." He just laughed as we walked away.
"Are you Chris?" I asked a man buried in papers up to his head. "Justin?" He paused. "Gwen? Is that you? I haven't seen you guys since you left for collage!" "Chris! How's Harry and Rich?" "And Caitlyn!?" Gwen added sarcastically. "Good! Yourselves?" "Great!" I said. Then I whispered to Chris. "Trouble in the kid department but hopefully soon!" "Great!" He paused with a puzzled look on his face. "Well, that came out wrong, but you know what I mean!"
"So, how much did Jon try to scam out of you?" "What did he get fired for?" "Embezzling funds. Almost 2.5 million dollars!" "That's a lot of cash." I said. "Yea it is! So, let me see the paperwork he gave you." Chris examined the stack of papers and said "Almost three thousand dollars out of your pockets! We try to sell at or around two thousand over M.S.R.P. What you would have paid is..." He searched the papers again. "You would have paid $49,989. So, the M.S.R.P. is $43,990. So, I'll sell it to ya for forty K! That's cause I know you. But don't tell no one! Ok?" Gwen and I looked at each other and nodded. "Good! Here are the keys. Go have fun. But only on one condition!" "What's that?" Gwen asked. "Check please?!!?" All three of us laughed.
After leaving, we went out to a late dinner ('Late' to us was 6:30-seven O'clock - you cant deprive a man of his food!). Then, we went to the honky-tonk to party and drink and...... Well,... The rest is history! To be exact, ... Four hours of history!
